urethra from compression during copulation. Consistent with a role in mechanical support, certain primates and carnivore species that have prolonged copulation also have a longer baculum. A role in female stimulation also seems likely, particularly in species where copulation is prolonged with multiple intromissions, thrusting or multiple ejaculations. Copulatory stimulation can have important consequences for reproduction as it may facilitate sperm transport and affect female sexual receptivity, as well as stimulate ovulation or initiate pregnancy. The baculum may help stimulate such responses, either directly (where it extrudes from the tip of the glans penis) or indirectly (via The baculum

Postcopulatory sexual selection influences baculum evolution in primates and carnivores

The extreme morphological variability of the baculum across mammals is thought to be the result of sexual selection (particularly, high levels of postcopulatory selection). However, the evolutionary trajectory of the mammalian baculum is little studied and evidence for the adaptive function of the baculum has so far been elusive. Here, we use Markov chain Monte Carlo methods implemented in a Ba...

The baubellum is more developmentally and evolutionarily labile than the baculum

Understanding the evolutionary forces that influence sexual dimorphism is a fundamental goal in biology. Here, we focus on one particularly extreme example of sexual dimorphism. Many mammal species possess a bone in their penis called a baculum. The female equivalent of this bone is called the baubellum and occurs in the clitoris, which is developmentally homologous to the male penis. To unders...

Anatomy of the baculum-corpus cavernosum interface in the norway rat (Rattus norvegicus), and implications for force transfer during copulation.

The baculum is a nonappendicular bone found in the glans tissue of members of five orders of mammals. Its function during copulation is unknown. Anatomical examination of the baculum and corpus cavernosum in the Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) shows that the two structures are connected by a layer of fibrocartilage, and that the distal tip of the corpus cavernosum swells during erection to surro...

The Genetic Basis of Baculum Size and Shape Variation in Mice.

The rapid divergence of male genitalia is a preeminent evolutionary pattern. This rapid divergence is especially striking in the baculum, a bone that occurs in the penis of many mammalian species. Closely related species often display diverse baculum morphology where no other morphological differences can be discerned. While this fundamental pattern of evolution has been appreciated at the leve...

Sexual selection and genital evolution in mammals: a phylogenetic analysis of baculum length.

Studies in invertebrate taxa suggest that postcopulatory sexual selection is an important factor in genital evolution. However, despite wide interspecific variation in genital morphology, evidence for an influence of sexual selection on mammalian genitalia is equivocal. Here I conduct phylogenetically controlled comparative analyses across four mammalian orders to assess how one aspect of this ...
